UNDERSTANDING THE GAUGES.
There are no frustrating regulations governing the world of railway modelling. From the nine sizes in popular use, you simply choose the gauge and scale best suited to your particular requirements.
FULL SIZE STANDARD GAUGE
All dimensions in millimetres.


Please note these are roughly life size but will vary with screen resolution.
For the benefit of those about to begin who might be confused between the terms 'Standard' and 'Narrow' gauges. It must be explained that 'Standard' refers to a gauge of 4'-8.5", the yardstick from which broad and narrow gauges are defined. The gauges and scales are illustrated in the table below.

FULL SIZE NARROW GAUGE

Please note these are roughly life size but will vary with screen resolution.
'NARROW GAUGE' defines any gauge that is narrower than 'Standard', and the sizes may vary considerably.
Possibly the best known lines are the 'Great Little Trains of Wales' which have examples of up to 1ft 11in (probably the most popular collection in Ffestiniog. The Talyllyn is 2ft 3in and there are even wider examples overseas.
